About the Exhibition Road Building Project

The V&A is embarking upon a major development project to create new galleries and public spaces accessed through an entrance on Exhibition Road.

The Exhibition Road Building Project will provide a state-of-the-art underground gallery for the V&A’s internationally renowned programme of temporary exhibitions, a new Exhibition Road entrance into the Museum and a courtyard and café at ground level. This project will allow the museum to improve our visitor experience and accessibility, enhance the relationship between the V&A and Exhibition Road, and enable future restoration of the historic spaces currently used for exhibitions.

The scheme is fundamental for the V&A to continue to fulfil its core mission of bringing in new audiences and to further establish Exhibition Road as an international cultural destination. Enabling works were completed in June 2013 to divert services within the site and building work is planned to start in early 2014 and complete by the end of 2016, opening to the public in 2017.

In March 2011, Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A) were announced as the winners of the international competition to design this scheme. AL_A are now working with the V&A to develop a more detailed design, and work on the main construction contract will commence in early 2014. The budget for the Exhibition Road Building Project is £42 million; over 70% has already been raised through private donations.

We are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for their generous support of this project.

A gift in your will

You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
